True stories, lessons and an attitude barometer that help a teenager stay centered, so they become neither a bully nor a victim.
Learn moreStephanie L. Mann helped a city cut its crime in half in two and a half years, with no help from the local police department. Fifty years later the method has not changed: put enough connected adults around a child and almost nothing can reach them.

How it started
1970s, Berkeley, California
A young mother started knocking on doors. Within two and a half years her community had cut crime in half, without the help of a local police department.
Alternative to Fear
Funded by the California Department of Youth, her guide reached thousands of police departments, libraries and the FBI, and turned one neighborhood's result into something any community could repeat.
Nationwide
That guide became the foundation of the national Neighborhood Watch program, the model that still shapes how American streets look after each other.
Today
Safe Kids Now takes the same principle indoors: children who are centered and self aware do not become victims or bullies, and families who know their neighbors raise them.
Safety was never something a department handed down to a street. It was always something a street decided for itself.

The new book
Socialism grows when people are divided, isolated and dependent. Freedom flourishes when families, neighborhoods and communities are strong, connected and empowered.
Stephanie L. Mann shares a blueprint for rebuilding the foundation of the nation, starting at home and right where we live. How strong families raise self aware, resilient children. Why faith, curiosity and responsibility create confident, compassionate citizens. How connected neighborhoods reduce crime, support each other and protect our kids.
It is time to stop waiting for someone else to fix the country. The power has always been in the hands of We the People.
The library
Written across fifty years for the people who actually keep children safe: parents, teenagers, teachers, pastors and the neighbor two doors down.

Commentary
Regardless of political affiliation, this is not normal. It signals that something deeper is broken, and America is facing a violence problem.
